James Bond author's handgun fetches ?12,000 at auction
A revolver presented to 007 author Ian Fleming has been sold for ?12,000 at auction.

The Colt Python .357 Magnum was made for the creator of James Bond, who lived at St Margaret?s at Cliffe, by gunmaker the Colt Company and given to him in 1964.

The weapon was engraved with the message: ?Presented To Ian Fleming By Colt's Patent Fire Arms Mfg. Co.? It is still in working order and was sold by Bonhams in London

Over the years Fleming took some criticism for leaving Bond exposed and under-gunned with the Italian Beretta .25.

In Doctor, No Bond abandoned his Beretta as he was ordered to begin carrying a Walther PPK 7.65mm as his standard issue firearm.

So around the time that Fleming was writing The Man with the Golden Gun, Colt presented the .357 Magnum to him.

The book?s villain, Scaramanga, used the bulky Colt, but Bond stayed with the Walther PPK which would not spoil the line of his immaculate dinner jacket.

Colt would have loved having him use an American made weapon, but I'm glad he stayed with the Walther. Great stunt work in the latest Bond flick, but the overall plot didn't seem as good as most previous. I liked the new Bond character, though even he also lacked in personal class by comparison. He seemed more of a Van Damme type. The service was portrayed as bungling, ill-prepared, and far from professional, IMO.

Bond, as created by Ian Fleming, was a naval officer and served under an Admiral. Ian was in a similar position in the NID, Naval Intelligence, during WW2. In days of empire, when our navy ruled the waves, NID reigned supreme in British Intelligence.

Britain has not had a Secret Service for a very long time and was invented by the author. The movies always get it wrong: Bond was not in the Secret Intelligence Service. The SIS had a very sad time in WW2.

Casino Royale, like the other Bond books, has some historical basis to it, though how much is open to speculation.

Solomon,
In my younger days I carried a Walther PPKs. It was a wonderful and very reliable weapon. Point and shoot, no sight worth mentioning but extremely accurate once you got used to it. It never jammed in 20 years although the stopping power of 9mm kurz (.380) left a lot to be desired.
Cheers,
