And so science advances slowly towards the obvious, that these people were much like ourselves. I remain sure that we are more closely related than science can presently demonstrate.

They remain the most (so far) successful colonists of Europe, in far harsher conditions than faced by modern man.

Their skulls show that not only did they have the capacity for speech, but greater intellect. That they made musical instruments demonstrates that these people communicated effectively and appreciated culture.

As regards knowledge, people from earlier times knew as much as we do now. The knowledge was merely different, reflecting their different world and challenges.
