Researchers are moving toward understanding the communicative power of khipu, the Inca's enigmatic knotted strings, which wove an empire together. On page 1065 of this issue, researchers identify one way that data and instructions were passed up and down the Inca administrative hierarchy and tentatively identify the first known khipu "word." Other researchers have independently announced a very early example of khipu; if verified, the find suggests that khipu were one of the world's oldest complex recording systems.

Khipu are knotted-string devices that were used for bureaucratic recording and communication in the Inka Empire. We recently undertook a computer analysis of 21 khipu from the Inka administrative center of Puruchuco, on the central coast of Peru. Results indicate that this khipu archive exemplifies the way in which census and tribute data were synthesized, manipulated, and transferred between different accounting levels in the Inka administrative system.

Experts 'decipher' Inca strings :
Researchers in the US believe they have come closer to solving a centuries-old mystery - by deciphering knotted string used by the ancient Incas.
Experts say one bunch of knots appears to identify a city, marking the first intelligible word from the extinct South American civilisation.


The coloured, knotted pieces of string, known as khipu, are believed to have been used for accounting information.

The researchers say the finding could unlock the meaning of other khipu.

Harvard University researchers Gary Urton and Carrie Brezine used computers to analyse 21 khipu.

They found a three-knot pattern in some of the strings which they believe identifies the bunch as coming from the city of Puruchuco, the site of an Inca palace.

"We hypothesize that the arrangement of three figure-eight knots at the start of these khipu represented the place identifier, or toponym, Puruchuco," they wrote in their report, published in the journal Science.

"We suggest that any khipu moving within the state administrative system bearing an initial arrangement of three figure-eight knots would have been immediately recognisable to Inca administrators as an account pertaining to the palace of Puruchuco."

Most experts agree the khipu represented an accounting system, but until now, no-one had been able to decipher them.

Ancient stories?

The researchers said their findings support what is already known about the Inca society.

"This work gives us some sense of how this complex information was compiled, manipulated, shared and archived in the Inca hierarchy," Mr Urton said in a statement quoted by Reuters news agency.

He said that the discovery could help researchers build up an inventory of place names, marking the first time khipu have been associated with words rather than numbers.

Mr Urton said there are about 700 known khipu, two-thirds of which are arranged in a numerical pattern.

The others may hold the key to historical information and stories.

"We think those may be the narrative ones," Mr Urton said.

The Khipu Database Project

   The Khipu Database Project began in the fall of 2002, with the goal of collecting all known information about khipu into one centralized repository. Having the data in digital form allows researchers to ask questions about khipu which up until now would have been very difficult, if not impossible, to answer. The Khipu Database Project was funded 2002-2004 by the National Science Foundation and Harvard University, and in 2004-2005 is funded by the National Science Foundation.

   The KDB and its associated data entry application were designed and implemented specifically for the use of this project. The khipu data schema is modeled on the physical structure of khipu. The overall structure of a khipu is that of a branching network in which the number of branching levels is highly variable, but in which components at every level share certain characteristics. The data schema for the KDB embraces the following critical facts about khipu construction: the interlocking relationships between khipu components, the branching or tree-like structure of khipu, the similarity of certain components, and the multi-dimensionality of khipu variables.

   In a relational database, each table may be linked to one or many different tables by defining correspondences between data fields in each table. These relationships can be complex, including restrictions on the possible data in one record given the data in another. Such a structure is ideal for describing a flexible object such as a khipu. Khipu components are specified in detail in their own records and linked into their proper places in the entire object through carefully designed relationships. In this way, the database builds a network or web of correspondences between khipu parts. This allows the database to mimic the physical structures of a khipu without loss of accuracy. It should be noted that the current design allows complete freedom in capturing khipu structure; the number of pendants that belong to a primary cord or knots that belong to a pendant are infinitely variable. Similarly, the database can accommodate any number of levels of subsidiaries.

   Certain aspects of khipu share many characteristics. For example, pendant cords at any level (top cords, pendants, subsidiaries, etc) have variables of fiber, final twist, end treatment, length, and color. Similarly, all knots on a khipu have a position on a particular string, a type, directionality, and a numerical value. By creating tables that incorporate these common elements for cords or knots at all levels, we increase the efficiency of our data structure while still allowing it to be extensible. Finally, some variables may themselves have many dimensions; color is the most obvious example. One cord may be composed of several different colors, and may even change color along its length. The database effectively and accurately contains color information by allowing many different color records for one cord. As other variables become known and are recorded, the database can be easily extended to completely contain new information, without compromising existing data.

      Most of the existing khipu are from the Inka period, approx 1400 ? 1532 CE. The Inka empire stretched from Ecuador through central Chile, with its heart in Cuzco, a city in the high Andes of southern Peru. Colonial documents indicate that khipu were used for record keeping and sending messages by runner throughout the empire. There are approximately 600 khipu surviving in museums and private collections around the world.

   The word khipu comes from the Quechua word for ?knot" and denotes both singular and plural. Khipu are textile artifacts composed of cords of cotton or occasionally camelid fiber. The cords are arranged such that there is one main cord, called a primary cord, from which many pendant cords hang.

   There may be additional cords attached to a pendant cord; these are termed subsidiaries. Some khipu have up to 10 or 12 levels of subsidiaries. Khipu are often displayed with the primary cord stretched horizontally, so that the pendants appear to form a curtain of parallel cords, or with the primary cord in a curve, so that the pendants radiate out from their points of attachment. When khipu were in use, they were transported and stored with the primary cord rolled into a spiral. In this configuration khipu have been compared to string mops.

   Each khipu cord may have one or many knots. Leland Locke (see references) was the first to show that the knots had numerical significance. The Inkas used a decimal system of counting.

   Numbers of varying magnitude could be indicated by knot type and the position of the knot on its cord. Beginning in the 1970?s, Marcia and Robert Ascher conducted invaluable research into the numeric significance of khipu, and developed a system of recording khipu details which is still in wide use today among khipu researchers. More recently, researchers such as Gary Urton have recognized the depth of information contained in non-numeric, structural elements of khipu.
