G?bekli Tepe (7 files)
G?bekli Tepe is an early Neolithic site in southeastern Turkey. It is famous for containing the world's oldest known stone temples (dated to before 9000 BCE) and because it appears to contradict the long-held belief that the introduction of agriculture preceded the construction of large buildings. G?bekli Tepe was created by hunter-gatherers, yet is assumed to be a key location for understanding the origins of agriculture.

Non-invasive archaeology. The study of ancient works-of-art and archaeological remains requires the use of analytical methods which minimise the impact on the integrity of the object. Spatially resolved analytical methods have significantly enhanced our capacity to study ancient material since they cause minimal and at times no damage to the studied object. They have also amplified the range of analytical information we can extract from ancient and valuable objects. Here we provide an overview of the recent achievements in the knowledge of the past obtained thanks to the use of a variety of spatially resolved analytical methods.

During the past five years, the Engineering Geoscience group at the University of California, Berkeley has been applying seismic technology in the search for two hoards of buried treasure ? in the challenging desert terrain of southeast New Mexico where we searched for the Victorio Peak Treasure, and in the jungles of the Philippines. looking for Yamashita?s Treasure (gold and jewels supposedly hidden by the Japanese military in underground tunnels during World War II). Study of Bronze Age copper-based swords of type Naue II and spearheads from Greece and Albania Study of Bronze Age copper-based swords of type Naue II and spearheads from Greece and Albania
791 Kb
Through the present work an effort is made to approach Bronze Age copper-based swords and spears, typologically identical, which have come to light at archeological excavations in Greece and Albania. The main aim of this work is to examine and correlate the copper technology in these areas and this has been attempted for first time. The chemical composition determined gave results on the level of the ancient copper technology, while microscopic examination gave some results on the level of the ancient metalworking (casting and hammering). The swords of Naue II type (13th -12th century BC) are the last in the series of swords used in Mycenaean Greece. The determination of the chemical composition was done by the use of Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS), Energy Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence (EDXRF) and Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometry (ICP-AES) techniques. Also a video microscope was used for the microscopic examination of the objects.

Migration on Rhodes during the Mycenaean Period Migration on Rhodes during the Mycenaean Period
173 Kb
This paper reviews issues of migration and ethnicity as far as Rhodes is concerned during the Mycenaean period. Thus a better understanding of these terms is offerred by highlighting their meaning and they ways they operate. The next step is to present the migration hypotheses that affect directly Rhodes and their basic points. The analysis used here is one that derives from the burial context due to the amount of evidence that is available in sharp contrast to the limited data coming from settlements. The local characteristics, the similarities and differences with mainland Greece and more particularly with the Argolid are also discussed. The conclusion proposes that on Rhodes there seems to be a strong local character with close interaction with the Argolid. Moreover the available evidence argues against a migration and an ethnic origin of the local poluation from the Argolid during the Mycenaean period.
An Overview of Chachapoya Archaeology and History An Overview of Chachapoya Archaeology and History

In a remote corner of northern Peru, the ancient Chachapoya once held sway over a vast territory, today scattered with the distinctive remains of their trademark cliff tombs and hamlets of circular structures. Feared warriors and famed shamans, the Chachapoya flourished from around AD 800 until their violent conquest by the Inkas in the 1470s. The arrival of the Spaniards in the 1530s spelled the end of the Inka empire, and brought renewed hardship to the Chachapoya as the conquistadors systematically seized their land and imposed forced labor and tribute burdens. More recently, looters and vandals have engaged archaeologists in a desperate race to save the remains of this great, but little known civilization.
Preliminary Results of Excavations in Timbuktu 1998 Preliminary Results of Excavations in Timbuktu 1998

The results of a preliminary survey completed in Timbuktu in 1996 were reported in Nyame Akuma 47 (Insoll 1997a). A first season of excavations in the city were completed in September 1998, which, as far as the author is aware, are the first to be undertaken within the city itself. The aims of the project were to assess the origins and development of the city through archaeological evidence. Thus similar to research already completed in the neighbowing city of Gao (Insoll 1995, 1996, 1997b, in preparation).
