Thought this scan of a coin I found while metal detecting would be appreciated by all. Used my Whites Surfmaster PI. My largest and best gold coin to date.

Hey Grubby,
Thanks! Looks like a coin minted in Spain. I'd say Seville. Very nice coin, great find!
Do you know the meaning of the devices on the coat of arms?
Cheers,

Made best finds with it This year with W&E Mag. They said it was Columbian and only worth $800.00+. I believe they're off on the mint and the value, but Oh well. Just got the April edition and my certificate. Was some very stiff compitition this year. I believe mine was the best gold coin though. They graded the coin Very Fine. sh!t what do I know. lol

O.K. Grubby,
I'll pull my coin books and see if we can't do a number on this for you. A coin such as you have posted is usually worth in excess of $2,000.
Cheers,

Grubby,
Well, it's not an Old World coin from Seville. On the reverse the 'NR' in the legend is the mintmark, indicating mintage in Nuevo Reino de Granada in Santa Fe de Bogot?, Columbia. The J.J. opposite the NR is the assayer. I do not know who this is. The "8" and the "S" on either side of the crowned Hapsburg coat of arms indicates 8 Scutum, the value. It is a New World coin. I will look further for a value and then we will go into the devices. Escudo is another way of saying escutcheon, or coat of arms. In Latin shield is scutum.
Cheers,

Grubby,
sorry to be so long in getting back to you. Here's the bad news, I'd have to grade your coin G (good) to VG (very good). I don't really think a grade of "F" (fine) could be applied since the rim seems to be damaged and it is an off-center strike. It was, unfortunately, a year when a great number of coins were minted. The value is around $750. In XF condition this coin would be around $1375.

Now the good news, This is one great find, Cheers!

I'll come back later and go over the devices on the Hapsburg shield.
