Knee-jerk reaction will be that it is altered.  But are we sure?  Who did it then, and where, and why, and how?

(Need help with image upload method.)

Cyn, I would be pleased to help you with this. Above are two rows of icons, and the image icon is the 4th one from the left in the second row. After copying the URL from the properties box in the image, paste it into the text box of your post. Click, drag and highlight the URL, then click on the image icon. Voila, fin!

Your link above isn't working for me, so perhaps you could post that URL and I will help correct it. Thanks!

Cyn;

I have some experience with US coins, so let me try to see if I can provide some help here.

The first and second pics are of what appear to me as a US Mint issued Morgan dollar. If you are questioning the striations that appear on the reverse of the coin in your closeup of the third pic, it appears to me that this is likely not an altered coin as much as a worn or damaged from wear coin. If the coin were in mint state condition and those striations were there, then I would have to say that the cause would have been a an accumulation of dust and grease in the die at the time of minting. That is not an uncommon occurrence in coins of that era. I hope that helps...

Oh yeah.  The mint mark is also gone.

Cyn;

Removing the mint mark from (beneath the eagle on the reverse) destroyed the value of the coin, even further than the extensive wear. In 1886 the Philadelphia mint produced 19,963, 886 of these, New Orleans produced 10,710,000, and San Francisco 750,000.
